Goechala Trek, Sikkim 2020
Goechala is a small place in the Sikkim, and a trek is really a dream come true for adventure enthusiasts wanting to visit this region. This place, entwined in the midst of beautiful flora and fauna, and close to the Kanchenjunga National Park which is ideal for trekkers to enjoy and explore the natural beauty of the region. Besides the gigantic summits of the Kanchenjunga this region also has other beautiful peaks around with splendid meadows and forests which makes this trek a great tourist attraction. The perfect time for a more clear view of this region is between October to November since the skies are crystal clear and the views of sunrise and sunset will be will be mesmerizing to watch. Though there is severe and harsh cold in the beginning of winter season, this is the right time to enjoy the beautiful snow capped peaks without any restraints. The massive peak of Goechala towers at an altitude of 4940 m!
About the GoechaLa Trek:
Depending upon the mode of arrival, the Goechala trek starts either at Bagdogra Airport or the New Jalpaiguri railway station. The trekkers will stay at Yuksom for the night and then proceed towards Goechala from where the Goechala trek starts. On the way, delightful views of Teesta River and drive uphill to cross the Legship Bridge, are truly exciting. Trekkers have to cross the Yuksom to Sachen villages across the Rathong River, Paha Khola Bridge and exotic lush green forests until they reach Tshoka village. Here, trekkers can see Prek Chu River in full flow and Viburnum Plantations (a kind of shrub) coupled with many more beautiful sceneries. Onward route from Tshokha to Phedang is full of thick rhododendron forests and leads to Dzongri from where trekkers can sight stunning views of Koktang, Rathong, Kabru, Kanchenjunga and Pandim Himalayan peaks. Thangshing valley full of prayer flags, Buddhist Chortens, majestic peaks of the Pandim and the murmuring sounds of the Prek Chu River enthralls the trekkers. Trekkers then climb through the glacier moraines, to reach the Samiti Lake and the Zemathang Plateau that serves as the gateways to Goechala. Also, capture awesome sights of the Kanchenjunga and other peaks hovering above the clouds to complete the trek. Few pre-Goechala trek formalities should be completed – ie. Trekkers should make an entry at the police station by submitting photo identity proofs and paying permit fees at the forest checkpost. Additional charges should be paid if carrying a camera. As usual, suggested to avail help from the trek leader who will assist in completing all the pre-requisites.
Day 1: 1Drive from Bagdogra Airport / New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Yuksom (1700 m) - - 180 Kms - 7 Hrs
Trekkers see the beautiful and exotic views of the Teesta river and Himalayan ranges. The trip starts by capturing the beautiful views of the Himalayan ranges while driving to Yuksom. On the way uphill, cross the Legship bridge and finally reach Yuksom. After arriving at Yuksom check into the hotels and night stay will be at Yuksom.
Day 2: Yuksom to Sachen – Trek - – (2200 m) – 5 Hrs
See the Rathong River, Paha Khola Bridge, Lush Forest, Orchids and wild monkeys. This is the first day of the trek - ascend along the huge gorges of Rathong River. Trek through the thick forests of Magnolia, Ferns and Rhododendrons and head towards the Paha Khola Bridge. Trekkers then have lunch to regain energy and be active throughout. Trekkers on their way see the beautiful orchid plants, colorful plants, and wild monkeys. Finally, arrive at Sachen, set up camps and spend the night here.
Day 3: Sachen to Bhakim (2600 m) / Tshokha (2900 m) / - Trek – 5 Kms – 4 Hrs
This trail passes through the beautiful Prek Chu River with splendid aromatic Viburnum Plantations around. This is a steep ascend to reach Bhakim. From here again trek upwards to reach a small Tibetan refugee (displaced) village settlement, Tshokha. Overnight stay will be at the camps.
Day 4: Tshokha to Phedang (3600 m) – Trek – 3 Kms – 4 Hrs
Trek through the Rhododendron forests, with lush green pastures and scenery on the way. The route is clear and the roads are smooth. Reach Phedang village. Overnight stay will be in the camps.
Day 5: Phedang to Dzongri (3900 m) – Trek - 4 Kms – 3 Hrs
After having breakfast at Phedang campsite, it is another beautiful trek uphill that takes trekkers 4000m up the Himalayas. En route, see the huge Koktang, Rathong, Kabru, Khangchendzonga, Simvo and Pandim Peaks. After this remarkable trail, trekkers get packed lunch, relax for sometime and get themselves acclimatized to the higher altitudes. A further climb will finally take trekkers to Dzongri for an overnight camp stay. The tiring body is sure to be rejuvenated after enchanting views of Koktang, Rathong, Kabru, Khangchendzonga, Simvo, and Pandim peaks.
Day 6: Dzongri
This day is a leisure day and is reserved for a short enjoyment trip. After waking up in the morning, trekkers can relax at the camps or can explore surrounding areas. The day is fully reserved to get acclimatized to the high altitudes, before scaling maximum heights. Overnight stay will be at the camps.
Day 7: Dzongri to Thangshing (3900 m) – Trek - 8 Kms – 7 Hrs
See the prayer flags, chortens, and the Prek Chu River. After a gradual ascent of around 2 Kms. trekkers can see low ridges at 2700 m. All through the way, trekkers get mesmerized by the exotic views of the Kanchenjunga and Pandim peaks. Then descend slowly starts towards the Pandim peaks and takes trekkers through the Rhododendron forests and the Prek Chu River. Have lunch at the lodge and continue trekking to finally reach Thangshing village and overnight stay will be at the camps.
Day 8: Thansing – Goecha La (4800 m) – Lamuney – Trek - 4 Kms – 2 Hrs
Trekkers see the beautiful views of the Samiti Lake, Zemathang Plateau, and the Goecha La Pass. Trekkers should start early to avoid rough climatic conditions that might obstruct the trails. Climbing uphill through the moraines, again it is a steep descent to the Samiti Lake for crossing the Zemathang Plateau. From here after 1-hour ascent reach the Goecha La Pass. On arrival at the pass see the beautiful views of the Kanchenjunga and other distant peaks, before trekkers start their journey back to Lamuney. Overnight stay will at the camp beside the Samiti Lake.
Day 9: Lamuney to Tshoka – Trek - 10 Kms – 8 Hrs
Trek to the exotic peak of Kanchenjunga and Dzongri Plateau. After waking up in the morning trekkers enjoy the splendid views of the beautiful peaks of Kanchenjunga from a distant ridge and again trek back to Tshoka. Trekkers will trek through the Dzongri Plateau to avoid the long and strenuous climb. The route passes through the Prek Chu River and the deciduous forests (where forests lose their foliage and leaves annually) of Phedang. Arrive at Tsoka and spend the overnight stay in camps.
Day 10: Tshokha to Yuksom – Trek – 14 Kms – 6 Hrs
This trek through the beautiful Pre Chu River ends here. This day trekkers will descend through the Pre Chu River and arrive at Yuksom that is the last lap of this astonishing trek. After arriving at Yuksom, spend the rest of the day at the hotels leisurely.
Day 11: Departure from Yuksom
The trek finally ends here. After having breakfast at the hotels, trekkers pack their bags and check out from the hotels. They are dropped at the airport/railway station and they head towards their respective destinations. They are sure to carry pleasant memories, sights and moments of the trek.

- Transport from New Jalpaiguri to Yaksum and back.
- Stay in tents (3 persons dome or ridge shaped tents) on sharing basis during the trek.
- All permit fees, camping charges, forest levy taxes that is needed for the trek inside the Kanchendzongha National Park.
